Important Minerals And Potential

Gold

With three large gold mines at Freda Rebecca, Shamva and Mazowe, Mashonaland Central Province is an important gold area. However judging from hundreds of poorly capitalised small mines and some well-resourced dormant large mines such as Eureka and RAN, current production can only be projected to be negligible compared to the potential the province holds. Gold deposits are clustered at Christonbank, Mazowe, Bindura, Shamva, Mount Darwin, Chiweshe and Guruve. There is great potential for alluvial gold with the Mazowe, Mukaradzi and Gwetera rivers estimated to contain several tonnes of gold.

Outline Of The Geology

The province’s heterogeneous geological environment spanning the Archaean to Recent times is responsible for the mineral endowment. Major metallogenic provinces include greenstone belts (Harare-Bindura-Shamva, Mount Darwin and the northern part of Guruve), the Great Dyke, various Granites and Gneisses, Ultramafic Complexes, Metamorphic Belts, Dolerite Dtykes  and Sills, Karoo Sediments, Laterites and Alluvium.

Administration

Forbes Mugumbate, Provincial Mining Director, heads the province, and is assisted by experienced engineers, geologists, metallurgists, surveyors, technicians, administrators and other supporting staff to carry out the mandate of the Ministry at the province level. The province has a staff establishment of 53. Currently there are 47 members in post of which 31 are males and 16 females.

Mashonaland Central Province

The province comprising the Guruve, Muzarabani, Mount Darwin, Rushinga, Shamva, Bindura and Mazowe administrative districts is endowed with a variety of economic minerals including gold, nickel, chromite, tantalite, semi-precious stones, dimension stones, limestone and marble that are currently being mined. There is also a poorly explored potential for other important minerals such as platinum group metals, uranium, vanadium, iron ore, Rare Earth Elements, petroleum and natural gas.
